The five-day RIPE 84 conference, held by the European Internet registrar RIPE NCC, has completed its work in the capital of Germany, Berlin. Representatives of Internet providers, network operators, domain registrars and registries, and other organizations involved in the development and improvement of the global network traditionally took part in it. The conference brought together 769 participants, 589 of them participated offline. It is understandable that most of them - 37% - represented Germany. Another 180 people participated in the conference online.
RIPE 84 was the first conference since the fall of 2019 which participants were able to attend in person; previously, events were held exclusively online for two and a half years due to quarantine restrictions. This fact became the occasion for many jokes, even in the official blog of the conference it was ironically noted that the participants finally had to change from pajamas into presentable clothes in order to join the work.
However, the conference itself, of course, was devoted to many extremely serious issues. Thus, the representative of the Federal Ministry of the Interior of Germany Konstanz Burger spoke in detail about the difficulties and ways to overcome them in the process of implementing IPv6 in government institutions of the country. And Sankalp Basavaraj (Akamai Technologies) presented a timeline of the discovery of a dangerous vulnerability in the Apache Log4j Java library of the Apache web server, its fix, and the exciting confrontation between hackers and cybersecurity specialists that unfolded against the backdrop of these events.
During the conference, many other important topics were also touched upon - from the security of Internet of Things devices and the creation of a single online resource for consolidating information about the DNS Abuse to the role of women in modern technology companies. The next conference - RIPE 85 – is going to be held at the end of October this year in Belgrade.
