History of .RU

April 7, 1994

Russia received the national domain .RU, registered by the international network center InterNIC. RosNIIROS became the domain administrator. Earlier, following the collapse of the USSR, national domains were received by Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia and Ukraine (1992) and Latvia and Azerbaijan (1993).

1995-1997

.RU initially developed at the professional level. Home pages using a second-level domain name were very rare at that time, and third-level domain names or, more often, a provider’s page were used, coming after the tilde symbol (~).

2006-2008

Peak growth of the .RU domain. During this period, an annual growth rate of over 61 percent was maintained. From 1994 to 2007, 1 million second-level domain names were registered in .RU. Over the next two years, the figure doubled: as of June 24, 2008 there were 1.5 million domain names in .RU, growing to 2 million by March 22, 2009.

2012

In September 2012, the domain reached 4 million domain names.

2015

In November 2015, the number of .RU domain names reached 5 million.

2019

Today, there are about 5 million .RU domain names. In terms of the number of domain names, .RU ranks sixth among world national domains and ninth among all top-level domains.

Domain names in .РФ

Registration of second-level domain names in .РФ is carried out in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Domain Name Registration in .RU and .РФ.

Registration in .РФ is applied for. Domain registration is open to legal entities and individuals, regardless of whether they are Russian residents.

  • domain name must consist of at least two characters
  • domain name must contain a number of characters that translates to no more than 63 Punycode characters
  • domain name must begin and end with a letter or a digit
  • the Russian alphabet can be used, including the letter “ё”; uppercase and lowercase letters are not differentiated
  • domain name cannot contain characters other than letters, numbers, and hyphens

History of .РФ

2007

The idea of creating .РФ appeared relatively recently, in 2007, though Cyrillic domain names were first introduced on the internet in 2001, when IDNs were only being tested: VeriSign began to register them in .NET and .COM. A little later, .SU opened to Cyrillic names. But it was decided not to introduce the use of Russian-language domain names in .RU, even though by the end of 2006 everything was in place to start registering them. At that very moment, ICANN announced the possibility of moving up the introduction of top-level domains in national languages, which made support for Cyrillic script in .RU impractical.

2008

In 2008, the idea of speeding up the launch of a Russian-language domain was supported by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. After that, active work began on the creation of a Cyrillic domain zone. In October 2008, it was named .РФ. Domain administrator functions were assigned to the Coordination Center for TLD RU/ РФ by the decision of the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of Russia.

May 12, 2010

The first Cyrillic addresses were launched on May 12, 2010, immediately after .РФ was officially delegated to Russia. These were the names президент.рф and правительство.рф.

November 11, 2010

Anyone could register a domain in the new zone. During the first day of open registration, over 240,000 domain names were acquired by users, and almost 700,000 domain names were registered in the first month following the launch of the new zone.

2019

Today, there are about 800,000 domain names in .РФ, and the domain is growing steadily. Domain names in .РФ are increasingly registered not just to hold in reserve and not just as a “beautiful” name, but to implement new ideas and to launch new projects. This suggests that Russian users began to actively explore the new domain zone and appreciate the convenience of using domains in their native language.

The top-level domain .ДЕТИ is designed to address Russian-language sites for and about children. It also serves the interests of parents, government, and civic and commercial organizations whose activities involve the education, development and social adaptation of children and teenagers.
