A little more than half of 2021 has passed, but it is already easy to predict the most successful general top-level domain to be named in December. .IO, which is formally the ccTLD of the British Indian Ocean Territory, is in fact open to everyone and very popular among startup founders and software developers.
The latest deal with Kick.io was another contribution to the gTLD’s success: several days ago, the domain name sold for $40,000. It was purchased by a DeFi startup launching a new crowdfunding platform for prospective projects, according to The Domains. Of course, $40,000 is by no means a record price for the domain market in general, but for .IO, which has seen deals worth $100,000 and more for the first time this year, this is a good sale. It is noteworthy that in the first six months of 2021, .IO reported deals worth a total of $2.4 million, more than in the previous two years combined.
