ByteDance shuts down ‘Ukrainian TikTok’

The Chinese tech company ByteDance Ltd., which owns the TikTok brand and service, has won the dispute over TikTok.com.ua, according to Domain Name Wire. The complaint was filed under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

There was little doubt about the outcome of the case. According to ByteDance’s filing, the domain was registered by a Ukrainian citizen, Alexei Dubinin, on May 17, 2019. The website copied the TikTok trademark and music note logo. At the bottom of the disputed domain name’s website, it also said “TikTok Ukraine.” The registrant undoubtedly sought to confuse users. Anna Prokhorova, a prominent Ukrainian lawyer who specializes in copyright, heard the case as a WIPO judge and ruled to transfer the domain TikTok.com.ua to ByteDance Ltd.
