Brazil launches third-level domains for librarians and detectives

As many as 12 new third-level domains have become available for registration in Brazil’s .BR today, according to Domain Incite. It is worth noting that NIC.br is perhaps the most pedantic registry in the world with its passion for having things neatly sorted and giving each registrant their place. As it is, it already has 130 third-level domain options, about 40 of them assigned to specific professions. Registrants are apparently expected to select a domain name based on their professional affiliation.

This option has today become available to Brazilian librarians (.bib.br), designers (.des.br), detectives (.det.br), nurses (.enf.br), chefs (.coz.br), geologists (.geo.br) and sales managers (.rep.br). Other profession-based domains are open for registration to software developers (.app.br and .dev.br), .log.br for logistics projects, .seg.br for security, and .tec.br for tech startups. It is difficult to say how attractive registrants find this detail. In any case, .BR is one of the ten largest ccTLDs in terms of the number of registrations: as of the first quarter of this year, about 4.1 million names were registered. The cost of annual registration is approximately $7.45.
