After a short break, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ resumes issuing its annual report, Russian Domain Space: Outcomes and Development Prospects. We are calling our readers’ attention to the thirteenth issue of the report, which reads about the most important and amazing events that took place in 2023 in the Russian and global domain industry and provides complete and detailed information on the domain market development. Readers of the report can see many graphs and diagrams characterizing the state of Russian and foreign domains, and obtain detailed statistics on the development of the Russian ccTLDs .RU and .РФ.
According to the report, .RU became the undisputed leader in growth rates among all ccTLDs in 2023. Over the past year, .RU grew by 506,024 domains (+10.3%) and took back the 5th place in the global ranking of country-code domains. In 2023, 1,709,718 new domains were registered in .RU. By the end of the year, the registration rate almost doubled: 123,000 domains were registered every month between January and September, while the average figure between October and December was already 201,000 new domains per month.
The Cyrillic domain .РФ also showed significant progress: over the year, the domain grew by 92,769 domain names, or 13.7%, which is an extremely high figure. .РФ retained its leadership among IDNs, ranking first in the number of domain names among all Cyrillic domains. In 2023, 244,266 domain names were registered in .РФ.
The report pays special attention to the security of the Russian domain zones .RU and .РФ, which showed their stability and ensured the stable operation of Russian websites amid a sharp increase in phishing attacks in 2023.
The report also provides data on the state of the global domain industry, including Russian and foreign new gTLDs, the penetration of domain names in different countries, and much more.
