Eleven years ago, on November 11, 2010, .РФ launched open registration. From that day on, anyone could register a name in the world's first Cyrillic domain zone.
The results of the first day of open registration were nothing short of sensational for the entire domain industry – more than 240,000 Cyrillic domains were registered that day. The .РФ registry today contains 116,808 domains (or 17% of all domains in the zone) over 10 years old. All in all, over 682,000 domain names are registered in .РФ, 93% of which are delegated.
There are 17 registered Cyrillic top-level domains in the world. These are domains of the countries that use the Cyrillic alphabet, as well as new gTLDs.
“The Cyrillic ccTLD .РФ retains its positions both in Russia and in the world. Thus, it continues to be ranked 19th among the largest ccTLDs in Europe and is the only non-Latin domain in the top 20. In addition, .РФ has been the largest Cyrillic domain in the world for 11 years. As for Russian users, we see their interest in .РФ, and the Russian competition Фотодомен.РФ attests to this. Participants submitted many photos depicting .РФ domain names, from advertising posters to users’ works. To participate in the competition, those interested had to send in a photo showing a domain with a working site, and our participants did exactly that. And we can see that the domain is popular, and the options for its use are truly limitless,” said Andrey Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ.
