Registration for second Summer School on Internet Governance opens

The Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ domains has announced the start of accepting applications for participation in the second Summer School on Internet Governance to be held online. The Summer School on Internet Governance was organized by the Coordination Center together with the Faculty of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University and it is part of the Schools on Internet Governance (SIG) global movement.

The first Summer School on Internet Governance was held in Russia in 2020. Then, 68 people registered to take part in the project, 53 of whom successfully completed first-stage training and received basic knowledge of the internet governance ecosystem. The second stage focused on an in-depth discussion of certain acute topics; the participants received non-standard tasks and worked in teams. Representatives of the academic community, technical experts and employees of international organizations delivered interesting lectures. Thirty-eight people successfully graduated from the School and received the corresponding certificates of vocational education from St. Petersburg State University.

The main task of the School is to immerse students in current issues of internet governance and digital cooperation at the global and local level and also to develop skills for full participation in international organizations, conferences and dialogues on these topics.

The target audience of the School is students, graduate students, young teachers, researchers of any educational field, as well as specialists and professionals interested in the Summer School topics. Event participants do not have to pay anything and following the successful completion of the program, students will receive certificates.

1. On July 19 to 31, the preparatory qualifying stage will take place.

Participants will join an introductory course on internet governance intended for immersing them in a global context and they will discuss the topics covered during weekly conference calls, as well as do homework that will help check how well the subjects have been learned.

Preparatory stage topics:

  • History of the internet
  • Internet infrastructure: basic concepts and principles of operation
  • Issues related to internet governance
  • Participants in the internet governance process
  • Global internet governance processes
  • Internet governance models

Based on the results of the stage, the 40 most active and involved participants will be selected for the main stage.

2. The main stage will take place from August 5 to 23.

The main stage is a program of vocational education from St. Petersburg State University and involves the interaction of participants with experts and practitioners in internet governance during thematic lectures and discussions. In addition, participants will work in teams to improve their knowledge of internet governance.

Main stage topics:

  • Why do we need ethics in AI?
  • Cybersecurity: can global rules be developed?
  • Sovereignty and digital – is there a contradiction?
  • Regulation of digital platforms: how to break the deadlock?

At the end of the Summer School, participants will have to write an analytical essay on one of the topics of the lesson.

The Summer School is free of charge. The application closing date is July 16.
