DENIC registry publishes an activity map in Germany’s ccTLD

DENIC, a non-profit entity, which is the registry of .DE, Germany’s country-code domain, has published detailed statistics of the domain extension for 2020. The information is presented as a map vividly showing registrants’ activity in .DE. As of December 31, 2020, it had 16.7 million registered domain names.

The leaders are Berlin (988,795 domain names), Munich (630,403) and Hamburg (587,237). However, these cities are not the champions when it comes to per capita registrations but rather a comparatively small city (with a population of about 170,000) Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, takes the lead. The city, which was, by the way, the birthplace of famous writer Erich Maria Remarque, has 1,563 registered domain names with .DE extension per 1,000 residents. As for the federal states, North Rhine-Westfalia is the leader in terms of the number of registrations with 3,303,069 domain names.

The map also reveals that foreign registrants have been very active in .DE. Their share in the total number of names registered in the German ccTLD makes up 8.7 percent, which falls just short of 1.5 million names. The United States tops the list for the highest number of foreign registrants, followed by the Netherlands and the Russian Federation.
