On November 16-20, the Internet Engineering Task Force 109 Online (IETF 109 Online) was held. The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is an open, international community of designers, scientists, network operators and providers who are engaged in developing internet protocols and architecture. The online meeting brought together 1,285 participants from different companies and regions. Among them was Dmitry Belyavsky, an expert from Cyrillic UA group.
At IETF 109, Dmitry Belyavsky spoke about the options for implementing EAI into the EPP.
“It is not enough to write standards for EAI, we need to implement support for these standards in internet protocols. For example, RFC 8399 added EAI support to X.509 certificates, and now is the time to add this support to the domain registration protocol. We have several options for adding this kind of support, and I hope that the community will be able to work out an optimal approach and provide EAI support in the EPP,” said Dmitry Belyavsky.
Belyavsky’s proposal created great interest among the participants of IETF 109 Online, and work in this area will continue.
In 2019, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ initiated the development of a patch for OpenSSL, which supports EAI in electronic signature certificates. This will allow sending cryptographically protected messages from such addresses. The patch complies with RFC 8398 "Internationalized Email Addresses in X.509 Certificates" specification.
