UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency gets domain suspension powers

Nominet, the registry that manages ccTLD .UK, announced an addition to its program enabling the speedy suspension of suspected criminal domains. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) will have the power to promptly block domain names suspected of being involved in illegal activity, Domain Incite reports.

It is interesting to note that the MHRA will become only the second government agency to be added to the program, after the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit of the City of London Police. The MHRA approves the use of certain drugs and medical devices in the UK (similar to the FDA in the US). It will also be responsible for approving vaccines for COVID-19 in (we would like to hope) the very near future. Giving it the power to quickly suspend suspicious domains is a precaution to curb potentially fraudulent activities related to vaccines.
