Preparations for ICANN 69 are fully underway; the Pre-ICANN69 ccTLD News Sessions were held online today hosted by the ccNSO. Those taking part discussed how various countries’ national domains are growing, shared their experience on protecting trademarks in ccTLDs and talked about how different procedures for resolving domain disputes were used in different jurisdictions. Representatives of the national registries of Vanuatu, Indonesia, Ukraine and Russia spoke at the event.
Maria Kolesnikova, chief analyst at the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, covered the results of the past 10 years of the national domain .РФ; she discussed the current problems of using Cyrillic domains and email addresses, as well as the events and projects carried out by the Coordination Center to promote IDNs and Universal Acceptance.
In 2020, the year of the 10th anniversary of ccTLD .РФ, the Coordination Center has implemented various initiatives that contributed to advance Universal Acceptance, Maria Kolesnikova noted. “Technical standards have been developed and there are software solutions available to implement full support for IDNs and EAI in applications and on websites. Of course, developers and system administrators will need to spend time on this and become competent on the issue. This primarily applies to employees of large websites and online services, as well as developers of software that is popular in Russia. For its part, the Coordination Center, as the .РФ domain registry, is willing to provide possible assistance, increase IDN literacy, develop partnerships in this field and share experience with its colleagues from other countries,” Maria Kolesnikova added.
As a reminder, ICANN 69 will be held online on October 13-15 and 19-22. The conference program includes IDN domains development, the implementation of Universal Acceptance, as well as national registries’ experience in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. All ICANN 69 meetings will be held on Zoom platform and require registration. Some of the sessions will be streamed on YouTube.
