IP&IT LAW 2020 winners announced

On September 21, the long-awaited award ceremony for winners of the 5th National Youth Contest for Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law Research (IP&IT LAW 2020) took place during the RIF in the City forum. The shortlisted finalists were announced back on March 25; however, what the actual prizes were going to be was kept a secret up until the award ceremony.

The contest was organized by IP CLUB and the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ under the auspices of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications, with the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), ICANN, the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service, the Federal Service for Intellectual Property and the Court for Intellectual Property Rights. Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ Andrey Vorobyev opened the ceremony. He noted the importance of the IP&IT LAW contest for building a talent pool for the domain industry. The contest enjoys an international level of support and cooperation with major international organizations such as ICANN that is responsible for domain issues, and the WIPO that is in charge of intellectual property.

The jury evaluated the contest entries based on their creative component and original content, extensive research, constructive ideas and proposals as well as other criteria. Below are the IP&IT LAW 2020 winners:

  • First prize: Vladimir Pisarev (“Cypersport and intellectual property: Countering cheating in e-Sports and e-Gaming by means of intellectual property law”), postgraduate student of Lomonosov Moscow State University. Vladimir also received another important prize, the World Intellectual Property Organization Medal.
  • Second prize: Anastasia Schchukina (“Protection of image rights in Russia and abroad”), student of the Private Law Research Center under the President of the Russian Federation;
  • Third prize: Denis Zakharenkov (“Intellectual property and domain names in new gTLDs), fourth-year student of the Saratov State Academy of Law. Dmitry also won the category established by ICANN.

Vladimir Pisarev thanked the contest organizers and noted that the IP&IT LAW 2020 opens doors to an academic career, which is very important for students. Egorov, Puginsky, Afanasiev and Partners law firm offered Vladimir Pisarev an internship. The winner also received a prize from another law firm, Semenov & Pevzner.

The jury also praised several other entries:

  • Artyom Levashov (“Legal framework for starting and operating mobile app stores”), graduate of St. Petersburg State University;
  • Yana Perepyolkina (“Virtual property: Prospects for legal regulation”), third-year postgraduate student of the Kutafin Moscow State University of Law;
  • Linar Safargaleyev (“General characteristics of legal relations involving a product and service aggregator”), second-year postgraduate student of the Ural State University of Law;
  • Pavel Syomin (“Big Data and intellectual property: System-wide research into web scraping using the general methodology of the internet law”), graduate of the Ural State University of Law.

The winners’ works and other entries singled out by the jury will be published in the 2021 Digital Economy Law annual catalogue and the Court for Intellectual Property Rights Journal.
