Welcome to the new Bug Bounty program

Поддерживаю.РФ, a project for developing infrastructure for internationalized domain names and email addresses, has launched a program, IDN Bug Bounty, aimed at searching for inconsistencies with the principles of Universal Acceptance in large Russian web services and popular software – primarily, problems with processing Cyrillic domains and email addresses.

Every month from September to November of this year, the program participant who adds the most information about such problems to the project database will receive up to 45,000 rubles as a reward. To participate in the Bug Bounty program, participants need to registeron the поддерживаю.рф website and take a free online course called “Introduction to Universal Acceptance.” After that, participants get the opportunity to enter information into the project database about inconsistencies they have found in services and software – for example, the inability to enter or incorrect processing of IDNs and EAI.

According to Maria Kolesnikova, head of the Поддерживаю.РФ project, despite the fact that Russia ranks second in the world in terms of support for email addresses in the national language, the share of software and services that fully support Cyrillic internet identifiers is still small. “For example, a software check that we carried out at the beginning of the year showed that the technical potential of supporting IDNs and EAI is far from being implemented everywhere. And a study on the potential of using Cyrillic mail on popular Russian websites, published in June, found that only 19 percent of Runet websites can receive EAI, and this is certainly not enough,” she said.

The project also allows those interested to check their software product for correct support of domain names in the .РФ zone and get a corresponding certificate. To do so, users must test their product for compliance with the recommendations for supporting domain names in the .РФ domain zone published on the website https://поддерживаю.рф/участникам/документация/ua-soft-domain-rf.pdf and provide information about the test results to the project organizers. Certified programs and services will also be published in the project’s IDN-and-EAI-compliant solutions catalog.

The Поддерживаю.РФ project was created by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ in May this year to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Russian ccTLD .РФ. It is intended to help software developers implement full-fledged support for IDNs and EAI in their products, and system registrants to correctly select and configure software that has such functionality.
