Who buys .ORG domain names

In an article recently published on the NamePros domain industry forum, renowned domain investor and analyst Bob Hawkes examines the use of .ORG domain names purchased between late August and late December of 2020 for $1,000 or more. He set the price threshold to single out and specifically focus on buyers with genuinely serious intentions. Creating a website under a domain is also quite a lengthy business hence the time limit that excludes domains bought this year.

Hawkes’ selection includes 536 domain names worth over $3.1 million altogether, making the average price of one domain name around $5,834. However, the analyst finds this figure misleading as it was influenced by several large deals during the period under review. 48 percent of the sold domain names have been developed with a functioning website. Another 24 percent are not responding and not in use while 16 percent are for sale again. Around 11 percent of the domains are parked with advertising links and one percent redirect elsewhere.

The main findings of the research are the result from the analysis of operational domains. Although .ORG was initially created for non-profit organizations and activists, Bob Hawkes found that only 44 percent of the websites developed in this domain over the last quarter of 2020 belong to non-profits. 56 percent, however, are run by companies or used to make profit. Companies and organizations in the education industry account for the majority of the .ORG websites, closely followed by healthcare. The third largest group of users is bloggers. Another major category is gambling and betting businesses.
