India actively promotes internationalized domains

The NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) registry of India’s ccTLD .IN has announced a remarkable offer. Until the end of January, each registrant of a new domain name in .IN will receive a free domain and an associated email account in the internationalized country code domain भारत. The promotion is also available to registrants of existing domains, provided that they renew their registration by the end of January, according to Domain Incite.

The offer is intended to stimulate the growth of internationalized country code domains and the creation of internet content in local languages. There are already 15 internationalized domains operating in India. And this is hardly a lot, considering that the country is home to about 1.4 billion people, the constitution of India officially recognizes the status of 22 languages, and the total number of dialects exceeds 1,650. The name of the internationalized domain भारत means "India" in the Devanagari script, which is used for over 100 Indian languages, including Hindi and Sanskrit.
