On October 20, 2025, the six-millionth domain name was registered in the .RU domain. This milestone comes nearly ten years after the previous one, when five million registrations were reached on November 5, 2015.
With this number of registered domain names, the Russian national domain .RU holds fifth place among national domains worldwide, trailing only .DE (Germany, 17.6 million), .CN (China, 11.9 million), .UK (United Kingdom, 10.2 million), and .NL (Netherlands, 6.1 million). .RU also ranks ninth among all top-level domains. In addition to the country-code domains listed above, it is surpassed by .COM (159.5 million), .NET (12.5 million), .ORG (11.4 million), and .XYZ (6.007 million).
The regions with the highest number of registered domains are Moscow (1,563,769), the Moscow Region (542,015), St. Petersburg (382,806), the Krasnodar Territory (177,361), and the Sverdlovsk Region (131,520).
As many as 97% of domain names in the .RU domain are delegated, with 27% registered to legal entities and 73% to individuals. Since the beginning of the year, 1.4 million new domains have been registered in .RU, averaging 4,866 new registrations per day.
Andrey Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, noted that the .RU national zone has reached this record-breaking milestone for the first time since its launch.
“Six million isn’t just a figure; it’s a reflection of the trust Russian users and businesses place in the national zone. Even in challenging economic and geopolitical conditions, .RU continues to grow steadily, confirming the resilience and potential of the Russian internet economy. Over the years, it has become a digital home for millions of companies, online projects, and initiatives that have chosen development in the Russian digital environment, its reliability, and security,” he added.
“The .RU domain zone is demonstrating a high level of activity. The majority of domain names serve practical purposes and contribute to the development of the digital economy and information space in Russia. As many as 1.44 million domains are used for active websites, while another 1.45 million are used for landing pages and web applications. A further 755,000 domains are used for email services,” notes Alexei Rogdev, CEO of the Technical Center of Internet, which provides backend services for Russian national domains and the registry system to ensure their stable and secure operation. “These statistics confirm that .RU is a reliable infrastructure for business and communications.”
Currently, 151 accredited registrars across 13 Russian cities operate in the .RU domain. The largest of these are Reg.ru (with a 48% market share in the .RU domain) and Rucenter (16%), both of which are part of the Runity group of companies.
“Today, companies require not just one, but a suite of domains for their daily operations. This includes not only a website for clients but also addresses for internal systems, email, and mobile apps. Furthermore, large businesses actively hedge their risks by purchasing domains with potential typos in their brand names,” comments Andrei Kuzmichev, head of the Runity group. “This protects both users who might make a mistake when entering the address and the company itself from attackers creating phishing copies of its websites.”
For reference, the .RU domain was delegated to Russia by ICANN on April 7, 1994. The first million domain names were registered in 2007. Two years later, the zone had doubled in size, and by September 2010, it had tripled. The domain reached four million names in September 2012. The five-millionth domain name was registered in November 2015.
