ICANN84 to focus on preparations for next round of new gTLDs

The ICANN Annual General Meeting (ICANN84) will take place in Dublin, Ireland, from October 25-30, 2025. Discussions at the meeting will focus on preparations for the second round of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), which is expected to launch in the spring of 2026.

Participants will also address the challenges of implementing Universal Acceptance, review two years of the Registration Data Request Service (RDRS), and continue discussions on combating DNS abuse. Other key topics at ICANN84 will include preparations for the WSIS+20 review as well as the future of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). These issues will be the focus of the Geopolitical Forum, which will be entirely dedicated to WSIS+20. For reference, the future of the IGF – including a possible extension of its mandate for the next decade – will be discussed at the UN General Assembly in December.

As usual, ICANN84 will feature various technical sessions, training initiatives, and educational panels offering specialized knowledge on the technical structure and security of the Domain Name System (DNS).

Experts from the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ will participate in ICANN84. Deputy Director Irina Danelia will take part in sessions of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO). As Vice Chair of the Strategic & Operational Planning Committee (SOPC), she will participate in its meetings. Irina will also join the Disaster Recovery Study Group, which will host a working meeting and a session, IANA Disaster Recovery.

Mikhail Anisimov, ICANN Head of Global Stakeholder Engagement for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, noted that the ICANN84 program in Dublin addresses the most pressing issues in the domain name industry and internet governance.

The end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 are marked by a number of important events. The next round of top-level domain applications, which the community has been awaiting for 14 years, is set to begin shortly. Extensive policy development has been underway throughout this period, and the upcoming meeting will serve to summarize these efforts before the new round launches. Significant attention is also being paid to information security, DNS resilience, the impact of geopolitical factors on the ICANN ecosystem, and broader internet governance,” Mikhail commented.

ICANN84 will be held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation. A live webcast will be available for remote participants. All sessions will be conducted in English with simultaneous interpretation into Russian, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic.
