On May 21, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the Domain Patrol project team held a webinar, Current Cybersecurity Threats and Protection Methods, for employees of accredited domain name registrars. Key topics included modern cyber threats, such as phishing, malware, social engineering, and fake applications. Representatives from F6, Dr.Web, and the Association of Professional Users of Social Networks and Messengers shared expertise, analyzing real-world incidents, offering anti-fraud advice, and detailing the latest cybercriminal tactics.
Dr.Web internet analyst Sofia Villen, in her presentation “Mass Phishing Campaigns: How Fraudsters Mimic Notifications from Marketplaces, Banks, and Postal Services,” explained why phishing remains a critical challenge. She highlighted the prevalence of bulk attacks involving thousands of third-level phishing domains, which are easy to create, hard to block, and cost-effective for attackers. These domains often incorporate well-known brand names to lull users into complacency. Combating such threats requires continuous monitoring and public awareness initiatives.
F6 lead analyst Ilya Savin focused on emerging social engineering tactics within malicious campaigns. He noted that fraudsters target governments, businesses, and individuals alike, with phishing, malware, and scams posing the primary social engineering threats in 2024–2025. Savin provided detailed breakdowns of each threat type and mitigation strategies.
Vladimir Zykov, Director of the Association of Professional Users of Social Networks and Messengers, addressed risks tied to pre-installed software from reputable vendors, and ways to combat fraudulent advertising in mobile apps in Russia.
“We often fall prey to the false assumption that because we are familiar with online threats due to our work, this knowledge is also understood and internalized by those around us. It is critically important not only to stay informed about current trends in phishing, malware, scams, and the social engineering tactics that accompany them but also to share this information with our loved ones,” emphasized webinar moderator Olga Baskakova, Project Lead at the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ.
