At 19:00 On March 20, this year’s first stream of the Digital Reality discussion club will be held. It will be dedicated to society’s fear of technology.
History knows many examples when innovations were met with resistance starting with concerns over steam engines in the 19th century to the recent fears of artificial intelligence and robotics. Why do people fear technological progress, even when it makes life easier?
Today, innovations can be met with fear in various spheres: people worry about artificial intelligence and automation that can replace them in their jobs and express distrust of digital data storage systems, and are afraid of digital surveillance and loss of privacy in the era of total digitalization.
The club meeting participants will try to find answers to the questions:
- Why is it okay to be skeptical about technologies?
- How do media and pop culture create fear of innovations?
- How does society adapt to new technologies and overcomes its fears?
- Is it possible to reach a level of technological savvy when new technologies will no longer frighten us?
Guests:
- Andrei Kolesnikov, Director, Internet of Things Association;
- Irina Levova, Director for Strategic Projects, Internet Research Institute;
- Ilya Peresedov, Journalist, theologist, member of The Communion of Catholic Coaches.
Moderator: Mikhail Anisimov, ICANN Stakeholder Engagement Sr. Manager for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
