Vadim Mikhailov, infrastructure consultant for the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, conducted a webinar on the topic “Visual Similarity Threats in Domain and Email Addressing.” Vadim talked about what homoglyphic and homographic attacks are and how they are used by attackers.
He presented an analysis of scenarios and real-life examples of phishing attacks, as well as multi-stage Business Email Compromise attacks that cause serious damage to corporate security. Webinar listeners can learn how attackers use similar characters in domain names and email addresses to deceive and infiltrate protected systems.
During the webinar, statistics were provided confirming the frequency of use of such methods for malicious purposes in the modern digital world. Vadim Mikhailov spoke about what solutions at the level of ICANN, registries, registrars and software developers can help protect against such attacks.
“New technologies almost always bring not only opportunities, but also risks. However, this is absolutely no reason not to use these technologies and close ourselves off from them. The emergence of internationalized domain names and email addresses has, of course, contributed to the expansion of the variety of scenarios for various malicious attacks and fraudulent schemes. However, this allowed the global community to develop appropriate protection mechanisms, standards and recommendations and implement best practices depending on what challenges the professional community faces,” Vadim said.
