Coordination Center Experts Met With Students of St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications

May 30 within the walls of the Bonch-Bruevich Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications experts from the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the Technical Center for Internet held open lectures. The event was timed to coincide with the 14th anniversary of the delegation of the Russian national Cyrillic domain .РФ. The main topic of discussion was the internationalization of domain names and email addressing.

SPbSUT Vice-Rector for Research Sergei Brusilovsky delivered a welcoming speech. He noted the importance of holding such lectures and their value for university students.

The lectures were attended by 73 1st-3rd year students of the university, many of them last fall attended lectures on the topic of user information security, which were also conducted by Center’s experts.

Maria Kolesnikova, chief analyst of the Coordination Center, shared her experience of working with national languages on the Internet and outlined the need to expand support for the Cyrillic alphabet on the Internet. Vadim Mikhailov, a consultant for Infrastructure at the Coordination Center, spoke about the technical aspects of internationalizing domains and email addresses. Therefore, Igor Lidin, leading developer of the Technical Center for Internet, presented the features of introducing Cyrillic mail.

.РФ turned 14 years on May 12, 2024. The Cyrillic national domain zone is actively growing, and today more than 770,000 domain names are registered by users. Cyrillic domains have become a natural part of the Internet in Russia, and the skills to provide internationalization support are now mandatory for any software developer and system administrator. Therefore, the Coordination Center considers it important to include knowledge and skills in working with Cyrillic domains and email addresses in university curricula for training future IT specialists. And we are working in this direction,” Maria Kolesnikova said.

The event ended with an interactive quiz on the game “Study the Internet - Govern It!”, which was conducted by the project manager of the Coordination Center Evgeny Pankov.

The organizers believe that such events will help future specialists better understand current trends in the development of the Internet and its infrastructure.

Let us remind you that in March 2024, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the Bonch-Bruevich Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications signed a cooperation agreement in the implementation of joint programs in the field of educational, methodological and research activities and educational events. In addition, representatives of Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications regularly take part in the Summer School on Internet Government, organized by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ.
