Domain Patrol project presented at CIS Member States International Economic Forum

On March 26, Project Manager of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ Yevgeny Pankov took part in a roundtable discussion, Safety in the Information Environment: Current Problems and Solutions, which took place as part of the International Economic Forum of the CIS Member States, “From Dialogue to Joint Projects in the CIS, EAEU and SCO Space.”

The discussion was moderated by Dmitry Povazhny of CIS Business Center for Economic Development and Olga Rubtsova of the Academy of Innovative Education and Development. The participants discussed the current challenges in the information environment, as well as legal, psychological, economic and technological ways to resolve them. In addition, the event presented experience in implementing best practices, such as the Safe Information Environment for Children project, which marks its 10th anniversary this year, and the Coordination Center’s Domain Patrol project, which Yevgeny Pankov spoke about.

Yevgeny Pankov presented ways for the domain industry to self-regulate in order to fight abuse in the .RU and .РФ domain zones. Using the Domain Patrol’s related organizations as an example, he showed how prompt prevention of criminal activities affects security on the Runet.

The speaker noted that the number of related organizations’ requests sent to registrars has increased almost fivefold since 2020: from 10,229 in 2020 to 54,977 in 2023. The overwhelming majority of requests in 2023 (88.4 percent) were related to phishing. Based on the results of the received requests by registrars and hosting providers for 2023, a total of 54,082 malicious domains were blocked, with the average response time being a record 21.5 hours.

According to Yevgeny Pankov, this year’s main trends in the Russian domain space include an increase in the number of incidents, improvement of the legislative framework, the planned implementation of the Unified Identification and Authentication System, and even more rapid investigation of cyber incidents.
