On December 20 and 21, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, with the support of the “Digital Department” and the IT Center of the Moscow Aviation Institute, conducted a series of lectures for bachelors and masters of the university on information security issues. The event was opened by the chief analyst of the Coordination Center, Maria Kolesnikova, who spoke about the work of the Coordination Center and its partners to ensure security of the Russian domain space and the Internet as a whole. She especially noted that knowledge in the field of information security is one of the components of the professional skills of a modern IT specialist.
The series was opened by information security expert Andrey Yarnykh, who gave a review lecture “New Challenges and Threats in the Field of Information Security.” The lecturer spoke about the main vectors of threats on the Internet, explained why you need to be careful with letters and messages, and also provided current analytical data on attacks on critical infrastructure and talked about the negative consequences of such attacks. In conclusion, he spoke about the principles of constructive information security – secure by design.
The architect of MSK-IX DNS solutions, Dmitry Kovalenko, touched upon privacy issues in DNS in his lecture. He gave an overview of domain name resolution technologies in local, private and global networks and talked about the impact on the progress of domain name resolution from the end user at the operating system and application levels. He also introduced listeners to the magazine “The Internet from the Inside” and presented students with several copies of the latest issues of the magazine, which is published in a very small circulation, and its printed issues are a bibliographic rarity.
The lecture by Center’s project manager Evgeniy Pankov focused on security in the blast furnace industry. He provided statistics on the main types of offenses on the Internet, focusing especially on one of the main trends of fraud on the Internet - phishing. At the end of the lecture, Evgeniy gave a detailed analysis of fraudulent schemes, showing the audience how scammers operate and how to deal with it.
Technical expert of the project Поддерживаю.РФ Vadim Mikhailov gave a lecture to the meeting participants on the topic “Threats of Visual Similarity in Domain and Email Addressing.” He spoke about the general principles of domain and postal addressing, introduced students to the concepts of IDN, EAI, homoglyphs, ligatures and homographs. The lecturer presented schemes of malicious influence when using visual similarity of characters and strings in domain addressing, citing as an example phishing schemes and BEC – Business Email Compromise attacks. Vadim Mikhailov also spoke in detail about the statistics of attacks on the global network and the Russian segment of the Internet and gave examples of incidents that have occurred recently. During the lectures, students also became acquainted with the “Поддерживаю.РФ” project, its useful materials and tools.
“It turned out to be a very educational, interactive, and most importantly useful event. The course of lectures of the Coordination Center ideally complements training programs for the study of computer networks, high-load Internet services and programming in general. Our students studying in the IVT program already have the appropriate level of training, so they not only had the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills by learning from practicing experts, but were also able to share their opinions and experiences on certain issues. We plan to continue and expand cooperation with the Coordination Center further,” Pavel Keino, Head of the master’s program “Design of High-Load Internet Services”, Associate Professor at Moscow Aviation Institute, said.
Let us recall that the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the Moscow Aviation Institute signed a cooperation agreement this year, and the event was held as part of the implementation of this agreement.
