On November 16-18, the XXXVII All-Russian Forum of hosting providers and domain registrars HostObzor took place in the Leningrad region. The Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ co-organized the forum and held the domain section.
The forum program traditionally featured company news on one slide; participants also discussed the specifics of changes in legislation and regulatory documents regulating the activities of Russian hosting providers, talked about the protection of users’ personal data, exchanged experiences and talked about the latest trends in hosting and the domain industry.
Managing partner of the law firm Lukash and Partners Denis Lukash held a round table discussion on the features of the new “law on Hosters.” Participants discussed the impact of the law on the industry, in particular, the emergence of a registry of hosting providers and the planned integration with the Unified Identification and Registration System, asked important questions, and also discussed changes in advertising laws.
The traditional domain section, which was held by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, was this time divided into two parts. In the first part of the section, under the Moderation of the Head of the Department for Work with Registrars and Users of the Coordination Center, Georgy Georgievsky, the participants discussed the main trends in the development of the Russian domain registration market. Special attention was paid to the growth in the number of phishing sites and the development of effective ways to combat them.
Director of the Coordination Center Andrey Vorobyev shared Russian and Belarusian experience in combating phishing. He noted that phishing websites are dangerous not only because of the theft of personal data and user funds, but also because of the active spread of misinformation. Andrey Vorobyev also invited participants to a meeting of competent organizations and registrars, which will be held this week. “HostObzor” is an event where domain and hosting market professionals gather to discuss the most pressing issues. Today, market participants are uniting and continue to work to ensure the stability and reliability of the Russian Internet in difficult conditions,” Andrey Vorobyev said.
In the second part of the section, Georgy Georgievsky spoke about the experience and difficulties that the Coordination Center encountered when transferring the domains of the registrars “101domain domain registration” and “NETFOX”, whose accreditation was revoked.
In the fall of this year, the Center temporarily took over the functions of domain registrars that had ceased operations and accepted 4,729 domain names for support. At the moment, 2752 domains have already been transferred to other registrars - of which 1696 domain names are in the .RU domain and 1056 domain names are in the .РФ. The average time for issuing an AuthInfo code was 2 days, and the average time for transferring a domain was 6 days. In total, in 37 working days, during which the domain names were transferred, 395 incoming calls were received, 714 applications were processed related to various user problems: contacts being out of date, administrators forgetting, registrar errors and other issues. “In fact, this was the first experience of the Coordination Center transferring a significant number of domain names from one administrator to another, and this was done by one department of four people. I can say with confidence that we can scale the experience gained to more domains!” – concluded Georgy Georgievsky.
