Students Developed New Modules for the "Study the Internet & Govern it!"

On May 18, the Center for Culture of National Research University Higher School of Economics hosted the finals of the Real Projects School, an international competition of projects and applied research for students of schools and universities based on the real tasks of employers. In total, more than 4,000 people from all over the country took part in the competition.

The start of the 11th contest was already given in November 2022 - at the Case Fair of the School. 52 partner companies of the competition acted as employers, offering 84 cases in various areas: programming, robotics, application development, engineering, gamification, 3D printing and many others. In total, 896 team applications were submitted for participation in the competition, 306 of them made it to the final. More than 1,500 people, including students from 137 schools, as well as students from 12 colleges and 7 universities participated in the final of the competition, which was held at the Higher School of Economics. Students from 40 schools and 15 colleges from various regions of the country participated in it by correspondence. The teams from Moscow and the Moscow region, Ust-Labinsk, Tyumen, Syktyvkar, Magnitogorsk, Irkutsk and Irkutsk region, Vladimir and Vladimir region, Sverdlovsk region, Kemerovo region, Novosibirsk, Volgograd, Krasnoyarsk, Ulyanovsk, Izhevsk, Smolensk, Krasnodar, Gorno-Altaisk, Simferopol, the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Dagestan reached the final.

The Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ was traditionally present among the employers, offering the participants to develop a script for a game module for implementation on the educational portal "Study the Internet & Govern it!". For more than six months, teams of students worked on the task, and three teams reached the final: two teams from the Lyceum of People's Diplomacy, Syktyvkar, and a team from the School No. 2086, Moscow. After the final defense of the projects in front of an jury represented by experts of the Coordination Center, the places were distributed as follows:

  • 1st place: the team of the Municipal Autonomous Educational Institution “Lyceum of People's Diplomacy” of the city of Syktyvkar, the theme of the module is "Quantum World";
  • 2nd place: the second team of the Lyceum of People's Diplomacy of the city of Syktyvkar, the theme of the module is "Digital Art";
  • 3rd place: the team of state budget educational institution "School No. 2086" in Moscow, the topic of the module is "Man-In-The-Middle" (one of the types of cyberattacks).

“We liked all the works, and it was really difficult to determine placing - the teams demonstrated a high level of project development. This year, complex and very interesting topics were chosen: "Quantum World", "Digital Art", "Man-In-The-Middle" - the topic is often incomprehensible even to an adult, and seventh-graders from the school of 2086 in Moscow did an excellent job and were able to adequately defend your project in front of a team of experts. The topic of digital art is now very relevant due to the development of NFT technologies and neural networks that can generate paintings that are very difficult to distinguish from the works of artists. Separately, I would like to note the coherence of the guys, the ability to work in a team and correctly allocate roles, analyze and systematize information, as well as a decent level of presentations prepared by the participants. All these skills will help participants in the implementation of large projects in the future,” said Olga Yakovleva, Head of the project department of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, who is a member of the expert commission of the Real Projects School.

The winners were awarded prizes, souvenirs and diplomas from the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ. In addition, after the content was finalized, the design was developed and the game mechanics were programmed, the scenarios of the winning teams will be added to the portal of the "Study the Internet & Govern it!" project in the "Knowledge" section with the authors indicated.

The organizers of the competition are state budget educational institution "School No. 2086", the Department of Education and Science of the city of Moscow, the Department of Information Technologies of the city of Moscow, the Faculty of Economics of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, National Research University Higher School of Economics. General partners - JSC "High-tech Research Institute of Inorganic Materials named after Academician A.A.
