Start of the Intellectual Property Week

The Intellectual Property Week – a series of meetings and discussions dedicated to topical issues of intellectual property protection – has started in Moscow. On April 20, The International and Comparative Law Research Center hosted a panel discussion "Intellectual Property in the Era of Information Technology Development", organized by IP CLUB in cooperation with the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the International and Comparative Law Research Center.

The organizers and partners of the 8th All-Russian Youth Competition on Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law – IP&IT LAW 2023 took part in the discussion. Pavel Spitsyn, Director of the Russian Representative Office of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), made a welcoming speech. “We have an interesting statistic: about 16.5% of all intellectual property applications in the world are made by women. That is why Intellectual Property Day, which we will celebrate next week, will be held under the slogan “Women and IP - A Catalyst For Innovation And Creativity”. We will carry out active work in this direction – we have all the makings for this,” he said.

The discussion was moderated by Marina Rozhkova, Doctor of Law, President of IP CLUB, Chief Researcher of Institute of Legislation and Comparative Law under the Government of the Russian Federation, Science Advisor to the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Moscow's State University for the Humanities and Professor of Russian State Academy of Intellectual Property.

The panelists discussed what threats to the legal protection and protection of intellectual property are caused by the rapid development of technologies, how new technologies can contribute to the protection of IP or, on the contrary, create a risk of infringement of rights to IP objects, and also how the law can regulate these questions.

Andrey Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, noted that more and more attention is being paid to intellectual property protection and issues related to Artificial Intelligence within the framework of many industry events in the domain industry, in particular, ICANN conferences. Sergey Zuykov, Managing Partner of Zuykov & Partners, made a presentation on IP Protection in Cyberspace, which reflected the connection between the real and digital worlds in the field of legal protection and protection of intellectual property. Vice President of IP CLUB, Ph.D. Alexandra Yorsh invited the participants of the event to discuss the topic of copyright ownership of the content generated by the neural network, and Ilya Khodakov, Senior Associate at ALRUD law firm, continued the discussion with a presentation on creating logos through the use of artificial intelligence in the context of trademark protection. Irina Gushchina, Senior Associate at the law firm Semenov&Pevzner, made another interesting presentation. She talked about how users create objects from the real world using in-game editors.

“When it comes to law, it is often said that this is the art of goodness and justice. But, on the other hand, when we dive into information technology, we understand that law is primarily a craft, and we need to understand how to protect our developments. The law must respond to our practical needs and offer solutions,” Marina Rozhkova said.

The awarding of the winners of the IP&IT LAW 2023 competition took place at the end of the discussion.
