Russian Experience in Supporting Cyrillic Domains Presented at IGF 2022

On November 29, at the Global Internet Governance Forum IGF 2022, the section "Role of Community to Achieve Universal Acceptance" was held, dedicated to universal acceptance. The discussion was attended by representatives of the technical community and civil society from Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe - leaders and experts of the Universal Acceptance groups: Raymond Selorm Mamattah, Ajay Data, Hadia Elminiawi, Anil Kumar Jain, Satish Babu, Dessalegn Mequanint Yehuala and Maria Kolesnikova. During the session, experts discussed the role of local, technical and academic communities, as well as the state and business in achieving Universal Acceptance.

Maria Kolesnikova, Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and Chairman of the Russian Working Group on Universal Acceptance, addressed the section.

She spoke about the work of the registry of Russian ccTLDs on the implementation of the Universal Acceptance of domain names and e-mail addresses. Maria noted that almost 700 thousand names are registered in the national domain . РФ, so it is the largest Cyrillic domain zone. “We see a demand for native language domains from users, and as a registry we want to provide high-quality and fully functional Internet services. The number of domain names in IDNs is constantly growing, in addition, ICANN is delegating new TLDs to IDNs - this means that software developers can no longer ignore such Internet identifiers and must integrate support for them into their systems and Internet applications,” said Maria Kolesnikova.

Maria also told the session participants that the Coordination Center, as a registry for ccTLDs, is actively working on the implementation of Universal Acceptance. On all its websites and in the ticket system, the Center provided support for Cyrillic e-mail addresses. “We plan to continue working on the introduction of support for Cyrillic emails in the .RU/.РФ domain registration system in order to provide registrars and domain name administrators with the opportunity to use such addresses,” Maria said. “In addition, we strive to inform the technical community about Universal Acceptance, for which we participate in various professional events, conduct trainings and webinars. As part of the “Поддерживаю.РФ” (Support.rf) project, we also provide useful tools and services for testing the developed software solutions and helping to ensure support for IDN and EAI,” she added.
