Teachers upgrade their digital competence with Explore the Internet & Govern It

The Coordination Center for TLDheld a webinar, Digital Literacy via Games, with support from the Agency for Strategic Initiatives. In all, 479 teachers of informatics and physics, specialists in teaching methods and education extension, and librarians from Irkutsk, Khanty-Mansiysk, Saratov, Barnaul and other Russian cities registered to take part in it.

Tatyana Novikova, a representative of the Smart Internet Foundation, acted as moderator. The foundation’s flagship project is domain .ДЕТИ that it created for websites designed for children and teenagers.

Webinar participants exchanged experience in using interactive games for upgrading the digital literacy of children and the ICT competencies of teachers. They also offered practical tools to help mainstream and extension education teachers expand the potential of the education process, understand how they can master digital literacy and draw their students into the IT world.

Olga Yakovleva, head of social projects at the Coordination Center, presented an interactive educational project, Explore the Internet & Govern It. It has several main goals: to develop digital literacy, improve knowledge about the organization, functioning and potential of the internet and digital technology, teach safe conduct online, and provide early career guidance for children and teens. About 170,000 people in Russia take part in this project.

“In the digital transformation era, mainstream and extension education teachers face a complicated task: to develop digital literacy skills they must master many digital practices and strategies, include them in their arsenal and use the most suitable practice in a particular situation. We hope the practical tools provided by the project Explore the Internet & Govern It will expand the potential of teachers in developing the digital literacy of children and teenagers and the ICT competencies of teachers themselves. We are grateful to our partners at the Academy of Innovative Education and Development (AIED), the Chair of Digital Education and Information Security at the Novikova Vladimir Institute for the Development of Education (VIDE), and the Digital Region non-profit organization for doing all they can to develop digital literacy,” said Olga Yakovleva.

Olga Rubtsova, an expert at Roskomnnadzor (the communications watchdog) and AIED Rector, described the project, Safe Information Space for Childhood, which won the Runet Prize 2020 in the Formation of Digital Immunity category. She said that a child does not need an ideal information environment for complete development and self-growth. It could even be dangerous. It is much more important to teach a child information safety skills, adequate and critical perception and how to evaluate information.

VIDE representatives Denis Mishin and Alyona Kondratyeva shared the experience of the Vladimir Region’s system of extension education in using the resources of the игра-интернет.рф for developing the digital competencies of teachers and working with children.

Head of the Digital Region Projects Department Kirill Polyakov spoke about the ecosystem for developing the digital literacy of children and the Дети.digital project for supporting talented children.

“Digital technology is providing teachers with additional opportunities for making the educational process versatile and interesting for children and selecting teaching methods that take into account the individual needs of a child. We hope the tools described by the webinar participants will be useful for teachers and will help them in their profession,” said Tatyana Novikova in conclusion.
