MTUCI students to study IDN and EAI

In June 2020, students of the basic department of the Association of Documentary Telecommunications (ADT) at the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI) defended their master’s theses on the development of the Russian Generic Module for Internet Technology Study (TOMIIT).

This module was developed by the Center for Information and Telecommunication Networks with support from the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ. The goal is to train young specialists for the Russian telecommunications industry. The project includes a manual and a laboratory practice book, and the distinctive feature is the use of Russian software and hardware in practice.

The theses supplement the TOMIIT manual and practice book on the subject “Internet Technology Fundamentals”. One of these additions focuses on multilingualism on the web: Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) and Email Address Internalization (EAI), and the principles of universal acceptance.

The students who defended their theses on this topic are suggesting that the internationalization of domain names and email is the trend on the modern internet. Many countries already use domains with characters from their national alphabets (for example, .РФ in Russia). The use of Unicode characters in email addresses is not as widespread – only a few email clients work correctly with them. There is also the problem that site owners are reluctant to update registration formats so they can handle non-Latin characters.

To support the topic of internet internationalization and the possible solutions to related problems through the efforts of young specialists, a decision was made on a revision to the TOMIIT manual and laboratory practice book. Students undergoing training in the laboratory will gain the following knowledge:

  • universal acceptance and its role on the modern internet;
  • how the symbols of national alphabets are stored in the domain name system;
  • what is Punycode and how it is used;
  • what changes are needed to fully use email with non-Latin characters.

In addition to studying theory, students will also learn how to configure a mail client and mail server and adapt the server to support universal acceptance, and learn to see the difference between the source code of a mail message with a Latin mailbox name and an internationalized mailbox name.
