40 percent of .RU domain names match owner company

The results of a study on the specifics of .RU domain usage and the alignment of a domain name with its owner company’s profile have been published on the website of the Coordination Center. Together the CCTLD and RAEC carried out desk research using the method of structured website monitoring and analysis of .RU domain name usage. The research was conducted on December 13-26, 2019.

The study aimed to identify typical consumer scenarios of domain name usage in the .RU domain. The researchers found that 55 percent of Runet websites deal with four industries, which are wholesale trade and retail, car maintenance services, IT services as well as entertainment, recreation and science.

Some 79 percent of domain names in the .RU domain are initially registered by individuals and only 21 percent by legal entities. According to the study, when it comes to the most common activities for Runet, the majority of domains officially belong to individuals. Only one legal entity per four individuals owns a domain in the four main industries. Company-owned domains prevail in the areas that account for less than 1 percent of Runet. For example, legal entities are responsible for over 60 percent of all domain name registrations of government websites (public administration, social welfare, etc.).

The research presents an interesting semantic analysis of .RU domain names. Approximately 40 percent of .RU domain names match the name of their owner company or the name of the person they are dedicated to. The highest rate of full matches with company names was found among online stores (55 percent). The second largest group is landing pages, with 49 percent completely matching the company name.

Additionally, the research authors studied the influence of embedded modules and resources for the integration of .RU websites, including creating corporate email in the domain name, on the development and promotion of the website.
