In memory of Alexander Shcherbakov

Alexander Shcherbakov, Chief Technology Officer at the Foundation for Assistance for Internet Technologies and Infrastructure Development (FAITID) (registrar of the .MOSCOW/.МОСКВА domains) and a member of the Council of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ in 2014-2016, tragically died on July 13, 2019.

Alexander Shcherbakov began his internet career in 1989. He helped create MSK-IX, the first in Russia and currently one of Europe’s largest internet exchange points, was in charge of technical projects at the Technical Center of Internet, supervised the creation of the domain registration system, and was a crypto officer for DNSSEC zone signing of the RU, .РФ and .SU domains.

Alexander also loved flying and held an ultralight aircraft pilot license. In 2011, he co-initiated and took part in a light aircraft expedition to the eastern coast of Russia. The Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, the Technical Center of Internet and MSK-IX co-financed and also served as the information partners of the project. An ultralight trike bearing the symbol of the Coordination Center flew across Russia from Moscow to Chkalov Island to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Valery Chkalov’s flight to the Far East. The expedition began almost precisely eight years ago on July 12, 2011. The 9,000 km route went across more than 30 Russian cities.

“Alexander Shcherbakov was a wonderful and intelligent person, as well as a top professional with a wealth of experience and a talent for generating and implementing unusual ideas. He was also a passionate pilot, and it is a great pity that his last flight ended so tragically,” Coordination Center Director Andrey Vorobyev said in his condolences.

The personnel of the Coordination Center send their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alexander Shcherbakov.
