Blocking illegal online content is a global trend

The Coordination Center for TLD .RU has released the Russian version of the paper titled Domain Name Registries and Online Content, published by CENTR, an association of European country code top-level domain (ccTLD) registries. The review was published on the CENTR website in Q1 2019 and was translated into Russian at the initiative of the Coordination Center. The document analyzes in detail the role of domain name registries in the creation and development of internet content.

The document covers subjects like illegal online content, the location of the content and its availability. There are many examples of how modern ccTLD registries can influence the content that users receive in different countries.

The purpose of the review was to explain the role of ccTLD operators, their relationship to online content, and also to clearly explain what powers registries have with regard to illegal content. The review included three parts: the first describes how the internet is organized and where online content is kept; the second was on illegal content and the fight against it by national registries; and the third part gives practical examples of current practices by ccTLD registries to combat illegal content.

“Illegal internet content is one of the most serious problems for modern society, and the fight against illegal content is becoming increasingly important. The internet transcends boundaries, and so we are very interested in the international experience and the efforts of other countries in this field. The Coordination Center takes effective measures to combat illegal online content with the help of competent organizations and the Netoscope project, and we regularly share our experience with other national registries,” Coordination Center Director Andrey Vorobyev said.
