Security was a key topic at RIGF 2019

On April 16, the 17th Providing Confidence and Security when Using Information and Communication Technologies annual conference, organized by the Russian Association of Networks and Services (RANS), kicked off in Moscow. The Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ is a traditional partner of the conference and takes part in its program.

The conference participants meet with heads of the industry and organizations working in the information trust and security area, learn about strategies to improve regulation and legislation and receive information about projects implemented and planned in this sphere.

The section titled “Providing safe and stable functioning of the Russian internet segment” was moderated by Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ Andrey Vorobyev. In his speech, he described how internet security had become a key topic at the Russian Internet Governance Forum 2019 held a week earlier. Vorobyev noted what First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Kiriyenko said about Russia being open to all international companies on the condition that they comply with the Russian laws on taxes and storage of personal data. International companies and organizations show high interest in the Russian market as is confirmed by the participation of foreign stakeholders’ representatives such as the UN, the Council of Europe, ICANN, RIPE NCC, national governments, the international academic community, civil society and businesses.

“The RIGF 2019 program reflected all the main trends; important questions were raised during the discussion and the Russian approaches to them offered. For example, Russia, in full compliance with the global trends, is working on a strategy to develop artificial intelligence. We are making efforts to increase inclusiveness and opportunities for equal access, and internet governance. In addition, issues related to information security and personal data protection are being addressed,” Andrey Vorobyev said.

Another participant, CEO of the Technical Center of Internet Alexei Rogdev noted at the section: “Today, the internet is not just a range of network technologies. The internet’s involvement in various spheres of life and business not only makes it easier for users and organizations but also creates challenges, including critical ones. The security of a national segment of the global network is one of the most important tasks that those who provide for its continuous functioning have to face.”

In addition to the heads of the Coordination Center and the Technical Center of Internet, the section was attended by representatives of Yandex, VimpelCom and the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media.

Andrey Vorobyev also spoke about the Coordination Center’s near-term plans to hold international events in 2019 and 2020 and the participation of its representatives in the largest global events related to the development of the internet.

This year, the .RU ccTLD marks its anniversary: 25 years on April 7, and the Coordination Center congratulated all the conference participants and gave them souvenirs featuring anniversary emblems.
