Registrars and Technical Center of Internet to strengthen dialogue

On July 25, the Committee for the Development of the Domain Space of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ held a meeting to discuss changes to the life cycle of domain names in .RU and .РФ domains, plus new proposals to improve the cooperation between registrars and the Technical Center of Internet.

Committee members discussed further development of an algorithm for calculating the date of removing domain names from registries. Recently, there has been an increased number of complaints from users whose domains were deleted due to non-payment, even though the users state that the domain was paid for. Administrators who rely on the free-date tracker, which does not take into account weekends or holidays, are late to renew domains, which leads to their deletion.

Committee members discussed this issue and the ways to resolve it and suggested that the Coordination Center’s director introduce changes to the algorithm for preparing domains for deletion. Calculation of the domain life cycle will now follow the work calendar.

The Committee also paid special attention to the registrar’s interaction with the Technical Center of Internet. The members suggested resuming the dialogue between the center and registrars and notifying registrars about scheduled changes in the registration system in advance. The committee also suggested introducing the obligation to test the changes initiated by the center in a test environment into agreements with registrars, thus improving technical and technological cooperation between registrars and the Technical Center of Internet and benefitting the development of .RU and .РФ Russian national domain plus the development of the domain space in general.

“Our committee is designed to solve relevant technological issues that concern both users and registrars,” said Alexander Shcherbakov, Chairman of the Committee for the Development of Domain Space. “The list of this committee’s participants includes both registrars’ and the Technical Center’s representatives, which allows us to target issues from every angle. And our discussion today proved that all matters can be solved quickly if you search for a solution collectively.”

The Committee for the Development of the Domain Space was created on the basis of the Committee on Infrastructure back in February 2018. Apart from considering technological issues, the committee participates in determining further development vectors for the domain space in the economy, marketing, government relations and cooperation between market players.
