Domain Market session held at HostObzor Forum

On May 25, the 28th Russian Forum of Hosting Providers and Registrars, co-organized by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU, opened at Raivola Hotel near St. Petersburg. Participants in the forum include representatives of accredited domain name registrars, hosts, telecom operators and internet companies.

The Coordination Center hosted a session on issues in the domain business. The Center’s financial director Ildar Khabirov spoke about the development of Russian national domains. RU and .РФ, and presented the latest statistical data. For example, the domain .РФ continues to lead among IDN-domains, and the Russian domain zone, including the .RU and .РФ domains, ranks third by the number of registered domain names among European national domains, losing out only to the German .DE and Britain’s .UK domains. In Russia, most names in national domains are registered in Moscow and the Moscow Region (more than 30%), followed by St. Petersburg. The share of delegated domain names in .RU and .РФ is slightly more than 95%, and this level has been maintained for three years already.

The most discussed topic was cybersecurity and the use of personal data. Today, on May 25, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force in the European Union, and all registrars and hosts were interested in how this law would affect their activities. In addition, the introduction of DNSSEC has recently become more relevant, and Alex Semenyaka, RIPE NCC External Relations Officer (Eastern Europe and Central Asia) and Technical Adviser, spoke about the development of this technology.

The Coordination Center’s traditional working meetings with registrars at the forum continued. This year, this meeting was held by Georgy Georgiyevsky, head of the Coordination Center’s Registrar and End-User Projects Department. He spoke about current requirements on accredited registrars, all new guidance from Roskomnadzor about the procedure for a registrar’s provision of data on the administrator of a domain on advocacy request and answered questions concerning changes in the Domain Name Registration Rules in .RU and .РФ. Participants discussed a new regulation for the formation of a stop list in the .RU and .РФ domain zones.

Tomorrow the forum will continue its work, with two round tables and more interesting presentations.
