5,108 domain names in .RU and .РФ terminated from delegation in 2017

The Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ has prepared an extended annual report on the activity of competent organizations in 2017. In 2017, accredited registrars received 5,487 requests to terminate domain names from delegation due to violations; 5,481 requests were considered by December 31, 2017, while the remaining six were still being addressed.

As a result, in 2017, 5,108 domain names were terminated from delegation, which is 93.2 percent of the total number of requests. Another 45 domain names (0.8 percent) were blocked by hosting providers. 328 domain names (5.9 percent) remained delegated. Of these, 139 were unblocked after action by their administrators, and the remaining 189 domain names were not blocked because the cause was swiftly eliminated by other means.

Domain names associated with phishing (2,698 domain names, or 49.2 percent) top the list. Then come domain names associated with the spread of malicious software (2,520 domain names, or 45.9 percent) and botnet controllers (222 domain names); 35 are financial pyramids and 12 – fraud websites.

Interestingly, the trend that began in 2017 continued in 2018. Thus, in March 2018, when competent organizations sent registrars 344 requests to block domain names, the percentage of phishing resources and domains associated with the spread of malware was approximately the same as in 2017: 173 (50.2 percent) and 171 (49.8 percent), respectively. In addition, 323 domain names were terminated from delegation in March, which is 93.9 percent of the total number of requests.

In 2012, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ introduced the practice of interacting with organizations competent in determining internet violations. These organizations are companies that provide the Coordination Center and accredited domain name registrars with information about resources with illegal content, cases of phishing and the spread of malicious programs using domain names in the .РФ and .RU zones. Today, eight competent organizations cooperate with the Coordination Center: Safe Internet League, Group-IB, Kaspersky Lab, RU-CERT, ROCIT, Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor), Bizon LLC, and the Bank of Russia.

Detailed information about how to report a cyber threat or other illegal actions online can be found on the Coordination Center website.
