Today, the Big Media Communication Forum (BMCF 2018) has opened at Moscow’s Expocenter. BMCF 2018 is held within the framework of the exhibition SVIAZ 2018, one of the most important events in the field of mass communications, and was organized by the Expocenter Central Exhibition Complex and RAEC (Russian Association of Electronic Communications). This annual forum of the Russian communication and telecommunication industries, high technology and internet will last three days and will bring together several thousand experts and representatives of the internet and internet-related industries. It will naturally complement the exhibition with its content.
During the plenary session of the forum, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ Andrey Vorobyev made a speech. In his presentation, he spoke about the events that took place in the Runet infrastructure in 2017-2018, and, in particular, touched upon the issue of switching between technical registry operators of Russian domains. “Switching between registry operators is an event which is unique for Russia and rare for the rest of the world,” Andrey Vorobyev said. “But the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ has agreed with the government’s position concerning the need to ensure the even more stable and sustainable operation of the Russian internet addressing system, which is why in the beginning of 2018, the Center transferred the functions of the technical center (registry operator) for TLD .RU/.РФ to the Rostelecom Group structures.”
During his speech, Andrey Vorobyev also gave an overview of the international landscape of domains, their development and use for various purposes. He noted that many national registrars are currently rethinking their role and are searching for new niches of work, while new TLD domains have now become an essential part of the global network’s daily life. Vorobyev also congratulated the Foundation for Assistance for Internet Technologies and Infrastructure Department and the .МОСКВА and .MOSCOW domain registrar on the fourth anniversary of launching their city-level domains.
During his presentation at the forum, Andrey Vorobyev also made an important announcement: the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ officially announced the beginning of its cooperation with the Russian State Academy of Intellectual Property (RSAIP). The Academy and the Center are long-time partners that have held a number of joint events. Now, together with the Center, RSAIP is officially planning to develop the Explore Internet – Govern it online game, to conduct research in the sphere of intellectual property and its use in the .RU/.РФ national domain zones for the Center, and to organize joint scientific and educational events, seminars, lectures and roundtables on the issues of intellectual property and the operation of the internet.
“The issue of intellectual property protection in the sphere of domain names is one of the key issues in the educational activities of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, and I am sure that together at the RSAIP we will be able to popularize this issue and raise awareness on how to handle domain names for all internet users,” Andrey Vorobyev said.
