At the 61st ICANN meeting Russian experience of increasing fees for domains was discussed

On 14 March at the 61st ICANN meeting in San Juan (Puerto Rico), a meeting of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) took place. Irina Danelia, Deputy CEO of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, made a speech at the meeting. She talked about how a Russian registry increased the fees for domains.

Irina Danelia shared information on all the stages of the work carried out by the Coordination Center. Thus, prior to proposing the Coordination Center’s Board to increase the selling price of domain names in .RU and .РФ, the Coordination Center conducted a study on the elasticity of demand. Domain name registrars, domain investors and end users (individuals and legal entities) took part in the study. The research allowed identifying the price ceiling as well as collecting feedback on this not very popular decision.

Moreover, Irina Danelia provided statistics that showed changes that occurred in the .RU zone after the increase in price. The graphs clearly demonstrated that the number of registrations decreased among end users that own a lot of domains (10,000 or more) who are domain investors and at the same time increased among end users who own 1-10 domains.
