On 1 February in Moscow, Infoforum 2018 was opened. It united government officials and leading Russian experts in the fields of information security, fighting cybercrime and creation of information security systems. One of the main goals of the Infoforums, which was held for the 20th time, is to strengthen cooperation between specialists in the field of national information security. In 2018 over 1600 people took part in the forum.
Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ was a partner of a session called “Safe Internet”. The participants discussed development tendencies of illegal activity using Internet, modern problems in the formation of the international information security system, the improvement of the system of national and international regulation of confidence measures on the Internet and many other topics related to security online.
Andrey Vorobyev, CEO of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, was one of the facilitators of the “Safe Internet” session. Other facilitators were the head of the All-Russian Advanced Training Institute of the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian Federation Alexey Moshkov, special representative of the President of Russia on international cooperation in the field of information security Andrey Krutskih and Vice-President of Tsitadel Group of Companies Boris Miroshnikov. Andrey Vorobyev said about the participation of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ in this event during the press conference at the opening of Infoforum-2018 that Infoforum is a landmark event where attendees who are providing cyber security meet government officials and discuss pressing issues of information security. “Speaking at the forum, representatives of the Coordination Center usually tell participants about security mechanisms in the addressing system of Russian Internet”, said Andrey Vorobyev.
Mikhail Anisimov, Deputy head of External Relations of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, represented the Coordination Center at the “Safe Internet” session. He delivered a report “Features of Information Security in Internet Addressing Systems”, where the main attention was paid to the Netoscope project. Mikhail presented new partners of the project that joined Netoscope in 2017, talked about the results of another year of work and new trends in the misuse of domains.
“One of the main trends of 2017 was illegal use of domains that haven’t even been registered. Malware that infects users’ computers contains automatically generated domain names, the details of which are not in the registry yet. Requests for these domain names create a semblance of a DDoS attack on the DNS system – a large number of responses about a non-existent domain lead to heavy loads on servers. In the future, these domain names could be registered and used to manage a botnet and update malware”, said Mikhail Anisimov. He also pointed out that today registries of top-level domains together with experts in information security develop effective mechanisms to counteract this phenomenon.
