Russian Domains release a new report

A new section called ‘DNS Statistics’ has been added to the Russian Domains Internet resourse. It contains information on how many authoritative name servers support second-level zones and which servers are these.

The data is collected by polling the servers. This allows to determine their availability and correctness of answers by eliminating “fictitious” delegation records in DNS. A-record is determined for each server name, which allows to identify potentially identical servers, for which different names are listed in the NS-records of the allocated zones.

Russian Domains, a resource created by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the Technical Center of Internet in 2011, has been actively developing in the recent time. For instance, in the end of 2017 a new section became available for users called ‘MX Statistics’.

The report presented in this section illustrates the usage of domain names for email exchange as well as the prevalence of certain technologies that ensure mail delivery. In particular, the report allows to see, which servers support secure mail delivery protocol STARTTLS, how popular are certain types of mail servers. Users can also create a ranking of mail providers.

MX-records and mail servers corresponding to them are analyzed; the results of this analysis are used for the report. Therefore, unlike simple statistics based only on DNS polling, the analysis of mail servers’ answers allows to select actually working nodes, determine their addresses and supported parameters.
