The second day of ICANN60 featured a session on the corporation’s framework strategy for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It was held in Russian, which has already become a tradition: last year’s ICANN57 marked the first time a meeting took place in Russian, garnering significant attention among Russian-speaking attendees. The session, which brought together participants from 12 Eastern European and Central Asian countries, centered on the main tasks ICANN has to accomplish in the region: ensuring the stable, reliable and safe functioning of internet infrastructure, holding specialized training sessions for law enforcement agents, and involving new regional stakeholders.
Attendees also talked about changes in the ICANN regional strategy that were made over the year, and gathered feedback on what there is still time to include in it. A considerable portion of the discussion focused on completed projects that were discussed a year ago. ICANN Head of Global Stakeholder Engagement for Eastern Europe & Central Asia Alexandra Kulikova praised the efforts of MSK-IX and the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ to set up a data escrow operator. The move has allowed Russian ICANN-accredited registrars and registries to keep user data back-ups on Russian Federation territory. “Last year, this was one of the major issues, but since then, and thanks to the regional community’s efforts, it’s been successfully resolved,” Kulikova said.
“I want to thank ICANN Head of Global Stakeholder Engagement for Eastern Europe & Central Asia Alexander Kulikova for the great organization of the second session on ICANN’s framework strategy in this region as part of the ICANN60 conference in Abu Dhabi,” Director of the Coordination Center Andrei Vorobyev said. “Compared with last year’s session in Hyderabad the discussion is more substantive, and more countries are represented. I’m pleased we were able to discuss current and future tasks and priorities for regional cooperation as part of the strategy, sum up the interim results of our work over the year, and outline new areas for further cooperation.”
