Netoscope working method proves highly effective

The EE DNS Forum has opened in Minsk, timed with Minsk Internet Week.

The Forum will seek the best solutions for DNS and the internet in general. The participants will discuss local practices, international experience and trends for the next few years. Representatives of top-level domain registries and registrars, internet providers, network operators, non-commercial organizations and state agencies are invited to the Forum.

Pavel Khramtsov, coordinator of the Netoscope project, spoke at the DNS Threats and International Cooperation section and presented his report Netoscope: 5 Years of .RU Domain Reputation Management, in which he described the origins of the Netoscope project, its background and history. “The unique architecture of the project allows for receiving data from various organizations, each of them specializing in combating a certain type of illegal content. In its turn, it gives us an opportunity to keep statistics on the illegal use of domain names and inform providers and responsible organizations on time,” Pavel Khramtsov said.

Netoscope is famous not only in Russia but in other countries too, and its success in providing domain safety was noted by many participants of the Forum. For example, ICANN Vice President of Security and ICT Coordination Dave Piscitello commented on Khramtsov’s speech, saying that Netoscope has done a great deal of work during these five years. Some time ago, Russian national domains were in the top five for the number of registered spam sites, and now they haven’t even made the top 20, he said, calling this the best proof that the method of data analysis and assessment used by Netoscope is highly effective.

Pavel Khramtsov also spoke at the DNS Elements section, where he discussed the construction of Anycast-clouds with DNS support for the Russian national domains .RU and .РФ. His report described the geographical distribution of the server nodes, the query statistics and main attacks in the Russian domain infrastructure. The results of the study on DNS localization prospects ordered by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU and .РФ were also presented there. According to the study, the highest demand for DNS localization for the domains .RU and .РФ comes from BRICS countries: China, India and South Africa.

Blocking and combating illegal content were already discussed at ENOG 14, which took place during Minsk Internet Week two days before. The section dedicated to this topic struck a chord with the audience and lead to heated debate both at the section and on the sidelines of the event. It was proposed to continue these discussions at the regular HostObzor National Hosting Provider Forum that will take place in May 2018 in the Leningrad Region with the support of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU and .РФ.
