Domain statistics at the center of attention for CENTR registries

On May 29-31, the Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries (CENTR) held Jamboree 2017. The conference was hosted by the largest European registry DENIC (German national domain .DE) in Frankfurt-am-Main. Over 200 participants representing 39 registries of national domains and 6 CENTR working groups, including the delegation of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, gathered to discuss current trends in the world of ccTLDs.

Chair of the CENTR Board of Directors Jorg Schweiger (DENIC) noted in his welcome video that today there is a need to expand cooperation in the rapidly changing market in order to ensure the stable and, most importantly, safe development of the network.

“CENTR’s Jamboree 2017 has brought our registries together today to find a creative solution to common problems,” he said.

Over the course of three days, the participants discussed compliance with regulatory requirements, development and implementation of security protocols, Big Data and statistics, business analytics, content and its blocking, information security, new business opportunities in the digital world, and so on.

Deputy Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU Irina Daneliya, who is also a member of the CENTR Board of Directors, held a round table, “Statistics of Domain Use - Lookin 'Up, Makin' Up.” The participants discussed their statistics and how to apply them correctly. The domain industry has accumulated a lot of data on the use of domains and many interesting cases, and many registries ask themselves what to do with this body of data. Speakers from different countries talked about how to achieve excellent results using statistical data correctly.

Denis Zhilin, Head of Social and Public Projects at the Coordination Center, spoke at the conference and presented the Netoscope cybersecurity project, stressing the important role of the center in ensuring internet security. The project was launched six years ago, and cybersecurity in the Runet has improved, partially due to efforts by the center and its Netoscope project.

The Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries (CENTR) includes 54 full and 9 associate members – together they are responsible for over 80% of domain names registered in national domains throughout the world. CENTR’s goal is to promote and participate in the development of standards and advanced practice among ccTLDs registries.
