Andrey Vorobyev: “Domain registration dynamics is an indicator of progress in the digital economy”

On May 29, the St. Petersburg Internet Conference (SPIC-2017) opened at the Park Inn by Radisson Pribaltiyskaya hotel in St. Petersburg. The event is organized by the Russian Association for Electronic Communications (RAEC) and the TRINET Group.  During a panel discussion, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ Andrey Vorobyev talked about the latest .RU/.РФ statistics. Domain registration dynamics, he said, have always been one of the strongest indicators of how the digital economy is developing both in a country as a whole and within its separate parts. “St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region firmly rank second in Russia after the Moscow Region in the number of registered .RU/.РФ domains, which attests to the stable development of the local internet industry.” Mr. Vorobyev announced the opening of the Positive Content competition, which begins, as usual, on June 1, International Children’s Day.

RAEC Director Sergei Plugotarenko noted that it is accurate to call St. Petersburg one of the largest IT-cities in Russia: “St. Petersburg occupies a worthy place among the world’s most innovative cities. The ‘northern capital’ has 14 universities training IT-specialists, and the level of technology education is one of the highest. Moreover, around 150 internet companies are based here.”

SPIC is one of the top internet events held in northwestern Russia. Its agenda traditionally covers issues related to internet advertising, media, marketing and the development of business. This year, it is focused mainly on the digital economy.
