Runet infrastructure security means user security

On May 22, TASS hosted the first open meeting of the Digital Home project to present the project and working groups created within it. The meeting participants included Alexander Pankov, Deputy Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media; Ilya Loyevsky, Deputy Head of the Russian Quality System; Sergei Plugotarenko, Director of the Russian Association of Electronic Communications; Tatyana Golubovskaya, Director for Development and Strategic Communications at the Regional Public Center of Internet Technology; Matvei Alekseyev, Director for External Communications at Rambler&Co; Ivan Kuznetsov, Head of the Press Service at SuperJob; and Georgy Georgiyevsky, Head of the Registrar and End-User Projects Department at the Coordination Center of TLD .RU/.РФ.

The meeting participants spoke about focus areas for Digital Home, new cyber threats, working with personal data and developing a dialogue platform between the public, businesses and the state to build a secure digital environment. Georgy Georgiyevsky reported on Runet infrastructure security as a prerequisite for user security. In his report, he described the Coordination Center’s work in this area at length. He explained how the expansion of DNSSEC allows for using the network safely and preventing address spoofing, as well as about using TLS certificates to ensure reliable work of Russian websites. “The Coordination Center makes serious efforts to use the HTTPS and TLS certificates everywhere. The constantly growing infrastructure of verifying centers allows users to be confident that they are using trusted resources and their data are protected from interception. Moreover, the use of TLS often protects networks from phishing. In general, our job is to increase reliability, safety and stability of the DNS system and, eventually, increase the chances of users getting access to various services,” Georgiyevsky said.

The Digital Home project was presented in November 2016. The project requires building several working groups. Digital Home’s partners include leading IT companies, internet services, personal data operators, public organizations dealing with information security, telecommunications companies and public authorities.
