.RU domain name is ninth largest in the world

The Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ has published its annual report, Russian Domain Space 2016: Results and Development Prospects. The report features the most important and interesting events in 2016 in both the Russian and foreign domain industries and detailed information on the development of the domain market.

2016 results show that as of December 31, 2016, 5,424,919 domain names were registered in the Russian national domain .RU. This makes .RU the ninth largest in the world among all top-level domains. The .RU domain also showed the fastest growth rate among the largest European TLDs (with over 1 million domain names). In 2016, 384,641 new domain names were registered in .RU, which is up 7.6%. This is 2.1 times more that in 2015.

As of 2016, 329.3 million domain names were registered in the world’s top-level domains; 27.6 million were registered in the new top-level domains, which is 16.4 million more than in 2015. The .XYZ domain leads in the total number of domain names among new top-level domains: it had 6,677,573 domain names as of 2016. It is followed by .TOP with 4,777,335 domain names, and .WIN with 1,259,612 domain names. The .XYZ domain grew by 4.9 million domain names (3.7 times) in 2016, .TOP by 3.8 million domain names (5 times), and .WIN by 0.7 million domain names (2.3 times). The report also features the distribution map of domain names in IDNs, numerous charts and graphs showing the state of Russian and foreign domains, and the information about cybersecurity on the net, plus many others.
