Security and IDN-domains development as main topics at ICANN58

On March 16 the 58th ICANN Meeting (ICANN58), came to a close. This year it was held in Copenhagen between March 11-16. A delegation of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ attended the Meeting.

The focus of this ICANN Meeting was the development of policies in such spheres as DNS system control, cooperation with law enforcement agencies and international cooperation. Thus, the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) discussed a systematic approach to mitigation of domain name abuse, countermeasures against malicious activity on the internet, first of all, the prevention of phishing attacks the number of which exceeded one million in 2016.

A lot of attention was paid to security issues. For example, there was a detailed discussion of a DNSSEC keys change (for more information - see our news item). ICANN58 participants also spoke about opportunities provided by the distribution of a secure TLS protocol on the internet. TLD Stat statistical platform, presented at the technical session, is a joint project of the Technical Center of Internet and of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, launched in 2012. The statistical platform is used by the Russian .RU, .РФ and .SU domains as well as by the Latvian national .LV domain. TLD Stat provides in-depth and up-to-date information on the state of domain zones for which data are collected. Moreover, the members of the Coordination Center held numerous meetings aimed at the enlargement and enforcement of international cooperation under the Netoscope project.

Creation of a new “thick” WHOIS system was also one of many actively discussed topics at ICANN58. However, a number of Internet community representatives said that they were concerned about securely storing such an enormous amount of private data in only one technical system. In their opinion, interaction of various registries and registrars with this system will be hindered by national data protection laws.

On the second day of the Meeting there was a session of CIS registries representatives. Its participants discussed the current state of IDN-domains and agreed on joint steps to be taken for the promotion and development of domains.

“ICANN58 has gathered a surprisingly huge amount of Russian-speaking internet community members. As a result, a lot of attention was paid to the development of the Cyrillic internet segment. We discussed a number of important issues, and I am sure that the ICANN Russian-speaking community will continue to grow!” This is how the Russian delegation’s Andrey Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ. summed up the event.
