Netoscope experts participate in a Europol operation

The Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ has earned the high regard of European cybersecurity experts, according to Shadowserver representative Benedict Addis, who spoke at the 57th General Assembly of the Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries (CENTR). The meeting of the European registries took place on March 1–2 in Yurmala, Latvia.

Cybersecurity was one of the central issues at the latest CENTR meeting. Representatives of various registries and registrars shared their experience in combating illicit websites. Particularly interesting was a report by Europol representatives on the Avalanche operation. The operation, which was carried out in 2016, involved over 40 registries from 30 countries managing 64 top-level domains. Investigators revealed a list of domains that were used to distribute malware. The operation took several months and required vast cooperation and data exchange. Then, over the course of a few days, the websites were blocked and malicious activity being conducted through these resources stopped. Around 840,000 domain names were inspected and deactivated.

Shadowserver spokesperson Benedict Addis particularly noted the efficiency and high level of expertise of the Netoscope participants. He stressed that Netoscope experts demonstrated high professionalism and made a significant contribution to this extensive international operation.

“Participation of the domain industry in combating computer incidents and violations online is coming up more and more at international conferences. I’m glad that CCTLD’s Netoscope project, which has expanded the number of scientists and engineers cooperating within the project in the past year, was so highly regarded by our European partners,” CCTLD .RU/.РФ Director Andrey Vorobyev said.
