Andrey Vorobyev: ‘Responsibility of information brokers is a very important issue’

On December 19−20,the Statute Law School hosted a seminar, “The Internet: protection of intellectual property and other rights.” The speakers informally and simply presented current information on major issues concerning the protection of intellectual property on the web. The participants in the seminar learned about nuances of formulating law suits, taking protective measures, proving violations on the Internet, different aspects of compensation for them and other issues related to the protection of intellectual property online. The seminar was held with the support of the IP Club.

The seminar was attended by representatives of the CC for TLD RU. Its director, Andrey Vorobyev, gave a lecture on the international system of running the Internet, whereby he described the structure, main principles and roles of various organizations in managing the Internet, as well as the legal aspects of online relations. His deputy on legal issues, Sergei Kopylov, focused on the legal aspects of work with domain names. In his lecture, he explained what responsibility is born by website owners and information brokers, what may lead to the blocking of sites and how to avoid it, and also described the rights and duties of website owners.

“The seminar gathered many practicing lawyers, primarily from online companies. The lectures delivered at the seminar helped experts to learn more about running the Internet. In turn, the cases they described contributed to our experience. Such seminars exemplify very successful, mutually beneficial cooperation. I’d like to emphasize the importance of the issue on information brokers’ responsibility. After amendments were introduced to legislation, law enforcement practice began to be established, and corporate lawyers have a lot of questions on this subject,” Mr. Vorobyev said, summing up the results of the seminar.

Other speakers included Dmitry Afanasyev, coordinator of the Expert Council of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, IT and Communications and chairman of the CC for TLD RU Committee on Legal Rules, and Marina Rozhkova, president of the IP Club and professor of the Kutafin Moscow State Law University (MSAL). The Statute Law School will hold the next seminar on this subject in February.
